With both The Chimes and The Paddocks residing in the Kent village of Challock, we thought we’d take a look at why it’s such a great place to live. Here are 5 reasons you should live in Challock, Ashford.
Location Location Location
Located on a very busy crossroad turned roundabout. Challock meets the A251 from Ashford to Faversham, and the A252 from Maidstone to Canterbury. The village is also relatively close to the M20, connecting London to Dover. If these great connections aren’t a convincing reason to live in Challock, maybe the rail links will be.
Challock’s close position to Ashford allows for the village to reap the benefits of the road and rail connections without the large town bustle. With Ashford International reopening the Eurostar link to Europe in the next few years, the station is a hotspot. And, only a 15-minute drive from the village.
Challock Village History
Challock villages name derives from the old English word Cealfloca which means ‘calf enclosure’. This is, of course, referring to the large standing stones rather than the animal. Some of these rock formations were used in the foundations for the local church which was built in the 13th century. As a village it lends itself to a history enjoyer, perhaps further research is another reason to live in Challock.
The ancient church of St. Cosmas and St. Damian is renowned for the two murals it holds, one of which was painted by local artist John Ward. The church is also known for having one of only two remaining candle beams in the country.
Local Heroes
For such a small village, Challock has been the birthplace of a few famous figures. The most famous perhaps being British showjumper William Funnell. Having won the Hickstead Derby 4 times, he is a very accomplished, and well-known sportsman.
Another well-known local is artist John Ward, a portrait artist, landscape painter and illustrator. Ward was well known, having 15 of his paintings hanging in the National Portrait Gallery. He has worked with royalty and had an honorary doctorate from the University of Kent.
Village Life in Challock
Village life comes with all kinds of perks, including local traditions and community activities. Everything from a local yoga class to the annual Goose Fair. The recreation sports ground is well maintained and hosts a range of different sports and events, including the annual Challock summer Fair. This year we are proudly sponsoring the event!
As well as local spots like the pub, a barn shop, and art and upholstery shops. The community of the village is a convincing reason to live in Challock, as this lifestyle is felt through all aspects of the village.
Rural Draw
One of the main draws to living in Challock is its rural location. There are farms, horses, and nature to see out every window. Challock sits high on the Kent Downs, an AONB. The landscape promotes the Old English Village look despite its growing community.
There is even a Chakra Centre down the road for those more spiritually inclined, connecting peace with physicality.
