What To Expect Living In Maidstone
25-09-2019 Blog
Maidstone is the county town of Kent, located just 32 miles south east of London. The River Medway winds its way through the centre of town, which is home to many historic buildings, such as The Archbishop’s Palace and Leeds Castle.
Whilst mostly known for being ‘The Garden of England’, Maidstone is one of the top five shopping destinations in the south east of England, with more than one million square feet of retail space.
In addition many people travel from other parts of the South and East of England to enjoy various activities that the town offers, including site seeing, and exploring the many clubs and restaurants. There are attractions suitable for all ages in Maidstone – we have listed our favourites below.
Leeds Castle
If you’re up for a day out with the family, then Leeds Castle is perfect. It is billed as being the loveliest castle in the world. It has become one of the most visited historic buildings in Britain, with more than half a million people going through the gates each year. There’s plenty to explore besides the fortress itself, with 500 acres of parkland, a maze, and an underground grotto. There are also free falconry displays, and regular events to keep the family busy.
The Kentish Lady
The Kentish Lady river boat offers a unique experience of the Upper River Medway, from 1-hour trips at weekends and selected school holidays to 3-hour lunch/dinner cruises during the week.
Family run, the single deck catamaran river boat weaves its way through Maidstone where history is around every corner. The best way to see the sights and splendour of the magnificent countryside is through the huge glass windows in the comfort of your own seat or outside on the front or rear decks.
Maidstone combines rural charm with modernity, providing everything you could want from a large modern town. The historic heart is largely pedestrianised, making it easy to navigate. The high street has recently been given a new lease of life, with two new public squares, seating and paving.
There are also plenty of local schools, and easy access to London via both road and rail making it the ideal location for both families and commuters.
