A Few Months Before You Move

Once you know your official move-in date you’d best start booking time off work right away. This will help you relieve some of the worry about finding time during the week of the move.

You can also use this time before the actual heavy lifting begins to organise insurance for the new home, get TV, phone and broadband arrangements sorted out and look into your energy suppliers (it’s always worth considering a switch).

This is also the time to book a removal van and whatever help you may need, and get all your storage needs sorted out. That may be just buying cardboard boxes, or it may mean renting temporary storage if you need it. Moving home is a fantastic opportunity to de-clutter, so don’t be afraid to throw things away.

The Weeks Leading Up To Your Move

Now’s the time to set up mail redirects and make sure all friends and family are aware of your upcoming change of address. You’ll need to register to pay council tax from when you move in, and liase with the developer to agree a convenient time to be given the keys.

Finally, make sure all the essentials you’ll need the day you move in (toothbrushes, towels, pyjamas!) are kept in a bag easily to hand so you aren’t scrabbling to find them on your first night!

After You’ve Moved In

As you’re settling in it’s important to check all your furniture for any damage accumulated in the move. In some cases you will be able to get the removals company to compensate you for noticeable marks and scratches.

You should also register with the local doctor and dentist and if you have pets, give them time to get used to their new surroundings and register them with the nearest vet.
